What it is

The 2026 Mac Studio, announced 25 Aug 2026. Same chassis shape as prior Studios. M5 Max: 18-core CPU, up to 40-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, up to 128GB unified memory, up to 614 GB/s bandwidth. M5 Ultra: up to 36-core CPU, up to 80-core GPU, up to 512GB unified memory, 1.2 TB/s bandwidth. Storage is soldered SSD (512GB–8TB on Max; 1TB–16TB on Ultra). Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6. Ships with macOS 27.

Who it is for

macOS users who want high unified memory for local LLMs, video, or pro workloads and already live in Apple’s stack. Good when capacity and silence matter more than CUDA or repairability. Wrong if you need discrete GPU memory clocks, ROCm/CUDA tooling, or an upgrade path after purchase.

Honest verdict

Buy the Mac Studio M5 if you already live on macOS, need 128GB+ unified capacity, and can wait for 22 Sep (or late October for 512GB). Skip it if you need CUDA, open hardware, or a box that ships this week — look at Spark / GX10 / Dell Pro Max for the GB10 128GB tier, or Framework / Halo cubes for Strix Halo. Capacity is real; the shipping date and Apple memory tax are the catches.
