What it is
The current Mac mini, announced 25 Aug 2026, shipping from 22 Sep. Base model is M6 (12-core CPU, 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, dual 16-core Neural Engine) at $899 with 16GB / 256GB. Higher tier is M5 Pro (up to 18-core CPU / 20-core GPU) from $1,699 with 24GB / 512GB. Same chassis as the M4 generation. Memory and storage still chosen at purchase and stay soldered.
Who it is for
People who want a silent, efficient desk box for local models under MLX / Ollama / LM Studio, already live in macOS, and do not need CUDA. Good for agents and everyday inference. Wrong if you need 128GB, repairability, or a Windows/Linux stack that assumes ROCm or CUDA.
What it actually runs
- Comfortable: 3B–9B dense on the 16GB base; 14B–27B class once you buy 24GB or 32GB. Prior M4-class machines already did this; M6 bandwidth (153–170 GB/s) and Neural Accelerators improve prompt and decode relative to M4’s 120 GB/s.
- Possible: 32B–70B class on M5 Pro configs with 48–64GB, accepting that 307 GB/s is still well below Mac Studio Ultra bandwidth. Capacity is the limiter, not the chip generation.
- Not the win: training, anything that wants a discrete GPU memory clock, or models that need more than 64GB. Do not invent tok/s numbers; independent M6 numbers are not yet public as of 30 Aug 2026.

- Price snapshot 30 Aug 2026: Apple list $899 (M6 16GB/256GB), $1,099 (16GB/512GB), $1,699 (M5 Pro 24GB/512GB). Amazon pre-order discounts of ~$20–$30 on a few SKUs. Education and military $100 off base.
- M6 maxes at 32GB unified; M5 Pro at 64GB. No later upgrade path.
- Bandwidth: M6 153 GB/s at 16GB, 170 GB/s at 24/32GB; M5 Pro 307 GB/s. Storage now up to 2× faster than M4 generation.
- 2.5Gb Ethernet standard (10Gb optional), Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6. Ports otherwise unchanged: dual front USB-C, three rear Thunderbolt (4 on M6, 5 on M5 Pro), HDMI.
- The real catch is the price climb. Base Mac mini went $599 (M4 launch) → $799 (mid-2026) → $899 (M6). You still start with 16GB and a 256GB SSD.
Honest verdict
Buy the M6 if you already live on macOS and want a quiet 14B–27B box under $1,500 configured. Buy M5 Pro only if you need the 48–64GB configs. Skip it if you want 128GB capacity, open hardware, or CUDA — look at Framework / EVO-X2 or Spark / GX10 instead. Independent tok/s numbers for M6 are still pending shipment.
